Thinning hair is very common during the aging process, especially among men. Some men begin to experience hair loss as early as age 20, and by age 35, close to 40% of men have noticeable hair thinning; this number jumps to 65% by age 60. Women frequently experience hair loss as well, with up to 40% of women experiencing hair thinning after menopause. Although it causes no medical issues, hair loss can cause serious self-esteem and quality of life issues among both men and women. Fortunately, PRP hair restoration exists.
Causes of Hair Loss
Although there are many causes of hair loss, the most common is an inherited condition called androgenetic alopecia in which hair follicles stop producing hair due to exposure to androgens (male sex hormones). Androgenetic alopecia affects both men and women. In men, the condition results in the classic “male pattern balding” where the hairline gradually recedes from the forehead. In women, the condition leads to general thinning of the hair all over the head.
A Closer Look at Platelet-Rich Plasma
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from the patient’s own blood in a quick in-office procedure. A blood sample is collected and centrifuged to concentrate the platelets. Platelets are small packages of clotting and growth factors. When the body experiences an injury, the platelets burst at the site of the injury, releasing the clotting factors to stop blood loss, and also releasing a potent cocktail of growth factors that speed healing of the injury. Doctors have been using PRP to help speed healing of surgical incisions for some time, and it has also been found to be helpful in healing chronic injuries. More recently, doctors have been using it in anti-aging applications to induce rejuvenation.
Treating Hair Loss with PRP
A number of researchers have tested PRP’s ability to restore hair loss and found it to be remarkably effective in stopping hair loss and inducing the growth of new hair. PRP is prepared from the patient’s blood and then used in numerous sites on the patient’s scalp. After consistent treatment, most patients experience noticeably thicker hair and significant hair regrowth that continues for months after the treatment.
